How does wifi work?

Where a wifi enabled computer requests information it makes the request for a wireless adapter. The wireless adapter contains an antenna which transmits information by radio signal. Another computer or in the case of a wifi hotspot, a wireless router, receives information via its own antenna and transmits information via physical wire (or ethernet connection) to the Internet.

When a computer wishes to receive information the process works in reverse. The router receives information from the Internet, translates the information into data and transmits the data to the laptop or computer. The computer receives the information via a wireless adapter and displays information on the screen.
